Blue Newt Unveils Blue Sprocket Engine at NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference

Blue Newt Software unveiled its Blue Sprocket visualization engine and its PixelTransit Image Generator system at the NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference in San Jose on October 2nd, 2009.

Blue Newt has been performing consulting and training in the visual simulation industry for the past 5 years and saw an opportunity to build upon its own experience and technology to create a new product for the simulation market.

"Our experience building our simulation engine into the Daimler driving simulator allowed us to streamline and optimize our core technology into a standalone product. We feel that simulation has been underserved by the advances in GPU technology and our Blue Sprocket engine brings the full power of the GPU to simulation" said CEO of Blue Newt Software, Bob Kuehne.

Blue Newt demonstrated the Blue Sprocket engine, with a component model supporting spatialized audio, high-performance networking, and rendering. The Blue Sprocket Renderer within the Blue Sprocket Engine provides a high-dynamic range pipeline, with scalable features throughout. The Renderer provides a number of industry-leading features including customizable culling, high-dynamic range, floating-point pixels throughout, stable cascaded soft shadows, high-dynamic range pixel-correct skydome, unlimited lights through a deferred-lighting scheme, and numerous post-processors. Post-processors include those for blur, bloom, fog, cloud-shadows, depth-of-field, ambient occlusion, and more. In addition, all elements of the Renderer are extensible and customizable. All elements of the renderer have quality and performance knobs as well to allow users to tune performance to their individual systems.

"We've designed the engine to be scalable, modular, and flexible" said Mr. Kuehne, "as systems are highly parallel on the GPU today, and becoming highly parallel on the host side as well. Our engine is ready for the present and that future."

The Blue Sprocket Engine forms the core of the PixelTransit Image Generation (IG) system. The PixelTransit IG allows any number of rendering boxes to be clustered together in service of rendering large-scale coherent images.

The Blue Sprocket Engine and PixelTransit IG will be widely available beginning Winter 2009, and beta applications are being accepted now.
